Beginner-friendly? no, I guess?
Neuro label Eatbrain's first EP of 2025 goes to none other than the up-and-coming Polish duo TESSERACTS.
And boy, is it one hell of an EP. TESSERACTS, in their trademark plague doctor masks, bring their blend of neurofunk and old-school hip-hop to their 4-track EP "Two Turntables and The Mic" for a brilliantly bold showing. Simply put, this EP is heat. Whether it's the heavier elements of "Crazy" or the more hip-hop leaning "Freestyle", TESSERACTS clearly had a bucketload of fun whilst making "Two Turntables and The Mic", and it's infectious. The funky basswork is incredibly easy to jam out to, the frequent switchups are a blast, and the hip-hop sampling adds that dirty little twinge to it that really sells the EP. But look closer and you'll find that "Two Turntables and The Mic" also hosts quality dynamic production, with its usage of different drops (that guitar section in the title track always gets me) and some meaty basses.
It's brash and an absolute blast to listen to, but something tells me "Two Turntables and The Mic" isn't as hard-hitting as it could have been. The first two tracks do sell that nasty fusion aesthetic very well, and "CEO of Underground" is a solid tune in its own right, but, to me, "Freestyle" lets the EP down a little. The tonality is disgusting, but it could have been even more disgusting.
Name | Comments | Superlative |
---|---|---|
Two Turntables and The Mic | Very funky neurofunk, employing thick basses and a sick guitar-driven rock finale, with an absolutely nuts final drop | Standout |
Crazy | Strong sampling and even stronger bass hits in the drops, brash and bold and... well, crazy | Heavy |
CEO of Underground | Less impactful and more motoring neuro drops, with frequent sampling and some nice instrumentation | Intense |
Freestyle | A lot more focused on the vocal, especially the second half—the neuro is good, but the all the vocal toying isn't my thing | Fun |
